The Lagos State University Students’ Union Government (LASU-SUG) has appealed to the institution’s management, the Governing Council and the State Government to reconsider the 168 per cent increased school fees for the students.
The President of LASU- SUG, AbdulBasit Ashade, made the appeal on Friday.
Ashade said that the LASU management should review the fee downward within 14 days.
He said that the union being the voice of the entire LASU students had been gravely disturbed by the increment in tuition fee.
He said that the union would continuously engage the necessary parties to actualise a reversal of the fees to the initial N25,000
Furthermore, The union treasurer comrade yomade debunked the rumour that the union had compromised the students interest.
He said “It’s to be noted that leadership of the union has never and will never compromise the interest of the student but rather keep on leading the frontiers of excellence and objectivity.
As such , the student populace should be rest assured that the executives arms are been proactive in addressing issues -Treasurer of the union

PRESS RELEASE ON THE INCREMENT OF LASU SCHOOL FEES
Good afternoon men of the press!
The leadership of the Lagos State University Students’ Union Government (LASU-SUG) welcomes you all to this emergency press conference.
The Lagos State University Students’ Union (hereinafter referred to as The Union) is saddled with the responsibility of protecting, ensuring and assuring the social and academic prosperity of ALL students of the Lagos State University. The Union is primarily concerned with the welfare of students, maintaining a peaceful learning environment and will at all cost protect the aforementioned.
Following the unprecedented hike in the school fees, which is evaluated to be 168% increment, the Union being the voice of the entire Lagos State University Students has been gravely disturbed and has been in continuous engagement with necessary parties to actualize a reversal of the fees to the initial fees of #25,000 (Twenty-five Thousand Naira only). Within the past few weeks, several meetings has been held with the management team, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education (Barr. Wahab Tokunbo), The chairman House Committee on Education (Hon. Ogundimu), other private stakeholders.
The Union understands the economic pressure this unprecedented hike would have on Parents, Guardians and Students. Especially has the world battles with economic effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, hence, the Union would stop at nothing in ensuring the increment is properly reviewed. This is a very challenging time and we must be sensitive not to compound this burden on indigenes and residents of the State.
Noting that the right to education is core to the development of any and every society, the Union hereby states her position as below:
- That the primary purpose of establishing the Lagos State University remains to impact and impart value in indigenes and residents of Lagos State for a better Lagos! This,, the State Government, ably led by Mr Babajide Sanwoolu, in line with the vision of the founding fathers of this great citadel of learning should reverse the hike in the school fees within 14 days from today January 8, 2020 to January 22, 2020.
- In the space of this 14days ultimatum, we enjoin the Lagos State University management team, Lagos State University governing council, Lagos State government executives and other pertinent stakeholders to meet and profer solution on the 168% increased tuition fee.
- Payment of school fees by newly admitted students should be suspended and portal for payment closed until a resolution is jointly reached by ALL parties and a directive is given by the Lagos State University Students’ Union to newly admitted students to continue payment.
- In conclusion, we appeal to the general public, especially the Lagos state government representatives and my fellow world class students to shun any form of protest and unwarranted dialogue without the presence of the Lagos State University Students Union leadership.
Verily, the Lagos State University Students’ Union, being a progressive Union, admires the tranquility and serenity enjoyed so far on campus and enjoins the State Government and all stakeholders to react swiftly to our agitations.
